What's up at school?
Junior High
7th Grade Language Arts We are beginning Unit 5 in their grammar books – Mechanics. They just finished teaching a lesson to the class about the various uses of commas in sentences. They did a wonderful job! They are also working on Voice for their Writing Trait. We have some VERY creative writers in seventh grade! They really enjoy all the creative writing activities we do in English class. The seventh graders are reading myths and working on vocabulary skills. 8th grade reading: We are beginning No Promises in the Wind by Irene Hunt. This is a historical fiction novel about The Great Depression. The students are learning the causes of The Great Depression and what it was like for teenagers who rode the rails during this difficult period in history. The eighth grade is also learning about the reading strategy Synthesizing for this month’s Book of the Month – Someday by Eileen Spinelli. The eighth graders are learning about adjective and adverb clauses. They are also working after school and on the weekends to get ready for our play “Cinderella Y’All”.

7th grade social studies: The students completed a study of the origins of the Constitution which included memorizing the Preamble, watching a Charlie Brown video and School House Rock videos, and creating three-branch government mobiles to hang from the ceiling. They are currently memorizing the first ten amendments to the Constitution with the help of flashcards and an interactive online game used with the SmartBoard. They are also getting an up-close look at the judicial branch by visiting Campbell County District court for the arraignment docket. Officer Hyett is helping them prepare for a mock trial which will be held during social studies class next week. 8th grade social studies: The students completed their study of WWI. For the 1920’s chapter, students team taught lessons to their peers which included raps, skits, and use of the SmartBoard. They watched Charlie Chaplin clips from Discovery Education, listened to jazz music and excerpts from 1920’s literature, and participated in a play based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. They wrote poems inspired by the 1920’s and typed them on the NEOs. The 8th graders then began the chapter on the Great Depression using a reading guide to analyze its causes and effects.
